The modern student experience in the digital age

The thing about education these days is that it is built on traditional foundations, and ramped up significantly with modern components. These modernizations include technological infiltration, digitalization, and the introduction of online learning methods and models. Modern students are busier than ever before, and as such they expect that their education experience is going to be able to handle their commitments to other areas in their lives. Of course, this is not an unreasonable expectation. But it is one that, up until quite recently, was largely unanswered. The way of the world is changing, and modern students are driving the change forward and upward.

We live in a decidedly digital age, and it is because of this that the entire student experience has fundamentally changed. Students today are the first generation to come through the global education industry having already gotten a footing in digital understanding and tech-savvy approaches. They have grown up in a world where they are positively surrounded by and immersed in technological advancement and digital devices. This is what they know. And by the time they reach the stage of going to school in any form, they are already more fluent with technologies than many older generations can ever hope to be.

And so, the education industry has changed as well. To meet the demands of modern students, the academic sector has essentially been forced into a transitory evolution. This evolution has changed everything, not necessarily eliminating the traditional scopes of education, but strengthening them by introducing included modern learning strategies (most – if not all – of which are driven by technological advancement and digitalization). There came a time where education as an industry reached a pivotal point: evolve or become irrelevant. The decision was not taken lightly and here we are.

From forward-thinking students seeking out MBA admission consulting, to students submitting their assessments by given deadlines, the education industry is changing, morphing into a stronger, more relevant 2.0 version of itself that can keep up with the demands of a changing world – and the students that live in that world. The familiarity with tech that modern students have means that they learn best when they are in environments that encourage tech-savvy learning. This does not mean that they only want tech in the classroom, but that having tech there in some form or another ignites their learning processes tenfold.

This is an exciting time to be in education, in any form. From the educators that teach students, to the students themselves and their loved ones, academics has never been this progressive, and it may very well never be again. This is a pivotal shift in the very foundations of the education industry, and it has come with much patience and several learning curves – some of which are still being carefully navigated by some today. One thing is for certain, however: in these changing times, introducing digitalization and technology into the learning process not only makes the industry stronger, but it makes it more capable to handle the increasingly digitally-inclined generations as they tackle education themselves.
