Ebook: Windows Vista Top 10 Tips dan Trik

Posted by snug | Tips Trik Vista | Friday 4 July 2008 7:59 pm

1)Explore the new Windows Vista start menu.

Looking for specific applications, Web sites, and e-mails is faster than ever with the streamlined Windows Vista start menu. To find a specific application or file, click the Windows key on the keyboard (or open the start menu) and enter the file name in the Instant Search field. As you type, Windows Vista dynamically searches filenames, metadata, and the full text of all files and displays the choices by file type. For example, type “out” to find Microsoft® Outlook®. 2) Discover the new search explorer.

Try filtering by type using the search pane and selecting Documents. Next choose to see your files in another way, via the new stack view. Select the author column header control drop down menu, and choose the option to Stack by author. Explore all the documents by a particular author by double clicking on an author’s stack. Now, save that search as a new search folder. Choose the option Save Search found on the top command bar and name and save your search folder. In the future, to re-run it, simply select the Searches folder link on the left side navigation pane, and double click on your search folder.

3)Experience the enhanced user interface.

If your PC supports the Windows® Aero™ user experience, open multiple files and see how easy it is to locate the right open window using the breakthrough Windows Flip (simply ALT+TAB) or Flip 3D (Windows key+TAB).

4)Browse multiple Web sites. Tabbed browsing in Internet Explorer® 7 enables a single Internet Explorer window to run with the convenience of multiple pages. Open a new page by clicking the empty tab on the toolbar or by right-clicking any hyperlink and choosing New Tab. Tabs can also be right-clicked to refresh individual pages or refresh pages as a group. You can close either individual tabs or an entire group, and you can save tabs as one favorite group. With the Quick Tabs feature, the icon just to the right of the Favorites icon, thumbnail images of all open tabs can be seen in a single view helping you manage multiple open tabs.

5)Print picture perfect Web content. Most Web sites are simply not formatted to fit cleanly on a standard piece of paper. With the new shrink to fit printing feature found in Internet Explorer 7 Web sites will no longer get cut off when sent to the printer.

6)Collaborate with a co-worker. Want an easy way to share files and applications with a colleague or customer—even when you may not be part of the same network? Windows Meeting Space is a new experience in Windows Vista that enables you to start an impromptu collaboration session with other Windows Vista users. Simply open Windows Meeting Space and start a session. Windows Vista will automatically detect other Windows Vista users that are on the same sub-net infrastructure or close enough for you to create an ad hoc (direct PC-to-PC connection) wireless connection. Once you have invited them and they have accepted, you can share documents by simply dragging a document to the Handouts area on the bottom right which instantly replicates that file across the other meeting participants’ machines. Dragging the file to the presentation area on the left side starts application sharing, enabling the other participants to watch as you present that file. If someone has a good edit for your file, you can make that edit in real time, or pass control of the application directly to that participant for them to make that edit for you.

7)Share a folder or file directly from your PC.

Windows Vista improves on the Windows network folder sharing experience first introduced with Windows XP by giving you more flexibility in what you can share with other people and improving the setup process. With Windows Vista you can now share folders and individual files with any other user on the same corporate network. From any explorer, select a file or folder and on the command bar choose the option to Share. Enter the name of another user on the same network, and give them appropriate rights of access—reader, co-owner, etc. To help close the loop, Windows Vista can even automatically compose an e-mail to the individuals with which you have shared the content. The auto-generated e-mail contains a hyperlink to the shared content, enabling the recipient to instantly be taken to the shared content.

8)Create an XPS Document.

XPS documents are a new archiving format perfect for preserving content and for securely sharing information in an application independent way. To create an XPS document, open any document in virtually any application, and select the print option. In the printer selection menu, choose Microsoft XPS Document Writer, and save the file. Double click on the file, which should open it in the XPS Viewer, which is hosted by Internet Explorer 7. The XPS document is a pixel-perfect rendition of the original source material.

9)Speed up your PC’s performance.

Windows Vista introduces a new concept for adding additional performance to a running system. Windows ReadyBoost™ lets people use flash memory on a USB 2.0 drive, SD Card, Compact Flash, or other memory form factor to provide additional memory cache—memory that the computer can access much more quickly than it can access data on the hard drive. Insert a USB 2.0 memory drive with at least 512 MB capacity. When prompted, click use this device to speed up my computer.

10)Recover a previous version of a document.

Windows Vista introduces a new feature: Previous Versions. This allows you to “roll back” the clock to an earlier version of a file that you may have accidentally saved over or edited. In the Documents Explorer, open a document, edit it, save it, and then close it. While selecting the document, choose the Previous Versions option on the command bar, which will bring up a list of previously saved versions of the individual file. Choose a previous version and Windows Vista will restore your file to that version. Careful: all edits since that version will be lost.

Dual booting Windows Vista Ultimate dan Ubuntu 8.04

Posted by snug | Lain-lain, Ubuntu, Windows Vista | Friday 4 July 2008 1:07 pm

Pra Instalasi

Pengertian kita semua sebelum menginstall adalah

  1. Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate sudah diinstall terlebih dulu

Updated 5 June 2008 for Ubuntu 8.04 and Vista Ultimate SP1.

Scenario: Anda ingin cara yang mudah untuk membuat dual booting Vista & Linux. Anda sudah menginstall Windows Vista dan sekarang ingin menginstall menjadi dua booting dengan Ubuntu 8.04.

Summary of tutorial: This is an updated tutorial - we previously used Ubuntu 7.04 and then modified the GRUB bootloader to force Ubuntu to recognise the Vista partition. In this tutorial we’ll use Ubuntu 8.04, use the Vista management tools to resize the main partition and install Ubuntu into the freed space, then use the latest version of EasyBCD to reinstate the Vista bootloader

This tutorial has been tested on a VMWare Workstation 6.0.3 virtual machine.

Here’s how to install Vista and Linux (with Vista installed first). Step-by-step instructions that assume no knowledge of Linux. (Now updated for Ubuntu 8.04 and Vista SP1).

Boot into Windows Vista and go into Disk Management - right-click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management.

Right-click on the main Vista partition and select Shrink Volume - the Shrink tool will assess how much space can be freed up.

As a rule of thumb Shrink will reduce the main system partition by about 50%. As long as the partition is big enough to begin with (at least 10GB) it should accommodate both operating systems.

Select Shrink and the tool will reduce the volume of the primary partition, leaving the rest of the disk free as unpartitioned space.

Once that’s done, shut down the Vista machine.

You’ll need the latest desktop ISO of Ubuntu (8.04). You can choose a list of download mirrors from the Ubuntu website, or use this link from Planetmirror. Download the ISO and burn it to CD to create bootable Ubuntu CD.

Boot the Vista machine from the CD and select “Install Ubuntu”.

Once the Live CD has loaded, on the Welcome screen choose your language and select Forward.

On the “Where are you” (timezone) page, select your location and then Forward.

On the next screen, choose the appropriate keyboard layout and then Forward.

Ubuntu will then load the disk partitioner to determine where it’s going to be installed. Choose “Manual - use the largest continuous free space”. This will automatically select the unpartitioned space we created earlier using the Shrink tool. Click Forward.

On the “Who are you?” screen, enter your username and password details, then click Forward.

On the Migrate Documents and Settings screen, if Ubuntu finds any user accounts to migrate, feel free to import it from Vista to Ubuntu. If it doesn’t find any, obviously this isn’t an option. Click Forward.

On the “Ready to install” screen, you’ll see that Ubuntu now has enough information to commence the installation. In the summary under Migrate Assistant, it should say “Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)”. This means that regardless of whether Ubuntu found any user account to migrate, it certainly knows that Windows Vista is installed on the other partition and is aware of it. Click Install.

See the install through and then let it boot into Ubuntu.

When the install is complete the system will reboot. When the GRUB boot menu is displayed, have a look at the last entry in the list.

After the Ubuntu boot options, there will be an entry “Other operating systems” and beneath that “Windows Vista/Longhorn loader”. By default Ubuntu will load itself after 10 seconds, but you can select the Vista option and Vista will boot normally.

If you want to use the GRUB bootloader then you don’t need to do anything further. Ubuntu installs GRUB into the MBR by default and will happily dualboot itself and Vista.

If however you prefer to keep Vista in charge of things, then you’ll need to do a little bit of tweaking.

Firstly, boot into Ubuntu and go to Applications –> Accessories –> Terminal. Then, type in sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst.

This text file contains all the information GRUB uses to configure various boot options. Scroll down and the entries between “## ## End Default Options ##” and “### END DEBIAN AUTOMATIC KERNELS LIST” are the LInux boot options. Slightly further down is the option for the Vista/Longhorn bootloader.

We’ll need these entries for use later on, so dump them out to a location accessible by the Vista partition. Alternatively, Ubuntu can access the Vista partition directly - go to Places –> Computer, and double-click into the option marked “xx GB Media”. This is the NTFS Vista partition. Ubuntu will prompt for authentication (your Ubuntu password) and then you can either copy the entire menu.lst file into it, or create a new text file on the fly, open it with gedit and copy in the boot entries.

Then restart the machine and boot into Vista

Now we need the latest version of EasyBCD by Neosmart Technologies - download it here. Install the application and launch it.

First, go to “Manage Bootloader” and select “Reinstall the Vista Bootloader”, then “Write MBR”. This puts the Vista bootloader back into the MBR, but the machine will only boot into Vista.

To enable access to the Linux partition, the best option is to install NeoGrub. Go to “Add/Remove Entries”, go the NeoGrub tab and select “Install NeoGrub”. This adds the “NeoGrub Bootloader” option to the Vista bootloader.

Once that’s done, choose Configure - this launches the NeoGrub menu.lst file, location at C:\NST\menu.lst. Use Notepad or Wordpad to open the file, and then paste in the boot entries. Save and exit, then reboot the machine.

The system will come up with two boot options. Select “NeoGrub Bootloader” and then the Linux boot options will load. Choose the relevant option and the system boot into Ubuntu.
