I was attending the 6th International Seminar on Industrial Engineering and Management (ISIEM), Batam, Kepulauan Riau, Indonesia on February 12th - 1 4th , 2013. The conference was hosted by Department of Industrial Engineering from 6 universities, and supported by Indonesian Association of Industrial Engineering Higher Education (BKSTI). In this seminar, I presented a research paper focusing on production system improvement.

This seminar also invited several keynote speakers, and Prof. Frits Blessing from Rotterdam University was my fave one. He discussed a lot about his experiences on supply chain and logistic industries. He also took a concern on MP3I implementation in Indonesia. He told that Indonesian Government must be flexible in managing connectivity of goods and developing sufficient infrastructures. His explanation truly enlightened me about one of IEUI research concern on Port Management.

The seminar session was continued with parallel session during the second day. The closing ceremony of the seminar took place in Merlion Park, Singapore. What a great experience! Thanks to Industrial Engineering Universitas Indonesia for the chance!

This event was held in Batu Hijau town-site, West Sumbawa. The purpose of this program is to introduce the society about mining operation especially in Batu Hijau and to create a memorable experiences for participants through different activities: mining, social, and nature. The participants of this event came from various backgrounds and I was an invited participant from education background/college student.

Newmont Mining Bootcamp Activities

This event started with medical check-up activity in Buin Batu Clinic. Actually, this activity is a part of selection process in Newmont Nusa Tenggara. In this session, the doctor explained about standard medical check-up that must be done for employee candidates. Some of us also took a part in medical check-up test, such as blind test, hearing test, and heart-rate test.

On the next day, we were taken to MMA office to get a comprehensive explanation about Newmont’s mining activities in Batu Hijau. After break and lunch, we visited the ultimate pit where the production process take place.

After having a comprehensive experiences about the production activity, we went to the process plant on the third day. In this area, we were taken to see an end to end processing activities.

On the fourth day, we went to the environmental-protection area. There are two main protection area in Newmont mining operation, land-area reclamation near the ultimate pit and tailing waste-management in Indian ocean. Luckily, I got a chance to visit the second area using high-speed vessel, named “Tenggara Exploler”. Indian ocean, I’m coming!

On the fifth and sixth day, we were taken to society. Outside the mining area, we did a lot of social activities with residents, such as teaching at elementary school and babies immunization at health centers. Besides delivering services, we also visited other local community activities such as waste recycling and turtle conservation in Pantai Maluk. One of the most unforgettable activities outside the mining town-site was staying overnight at local resident’s house. I really enjoyed that moment.

On the seventh day, we left Batu Hijau town-site and went off to Lombok. In Lombok, we stayed at Novotel Kuta and had a closing ceremony. On the last day, we went back to reality named Jakarta. Thanks Newmont Nusa Tenggara for the great chance!

The purpose of this visit is sharing knowledge and research opportunities regarding the use of System Dynamics (SD) in Strategy, and open up future collaborations with SD practitioners in Indonesia.

The session started with a short discussion on one of his paper regarding the use of SD modeling in tackling human resource issues in a professional service firms (Kunc, M. Achieving a balanced organizational structure in professional services firms: some lessons from a modeling project. Systems Dynamics Review 24, 2008).

This discussion took place in interactive and lively. The research assistants (including me) got a new insight of the use of SD modeling in improving the organization’s performances. Question and answer session also enriched our understanding to become more solid. The discussion concluded by a short presentation on possible research directions on System Dynamics based on resource based strategic view.

Basic statistical method is usually used for testing means and standard deviation of one or two population at the same time. However, this method cannot be used while the population is more than two groups. An Analysis of Variance, popularly known as the ANOVA test, can be used in cases where there are more than two groups.

The concept of ANOVA was born in the beginnings of agricultural era in 1918-1940. It was invented by Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher while working at Rothamsted Agricultural Experiment Station, London, England. This method emerged because of variations, which represent inequality of a distribution of variations of certain states in a population.

There are many techniques and designs that can be used in analyzing variances. In this post, I’ll share about One-Way Analysis of Variance, the simplest version of ANOVA. A One-Way Analysis of Variance (One-Way ANOVA) is a way to test the equality of three or more means at one time by using variances. It is used for a single-factor between subjects design, i.e. for comparing two or more treatment means.

In One-Way ANOVA, we use F-test for comparing the treatment means. If the value of treatment mean is greater than the F value in certain level of confidence, we can conclude that the treatment means differ or significantly affect the response variable. The following attachment may be useful to help you in understanding the concept of One-Way ANOVA.

High-Performance Fuel Experiments

Pertamina is currently conducting a research for the formulation of an efficient and highly performance fuel. The response variable is revealed in km/hours, as top speed. The researchers wants to determine the best octane ratings (%) that produce the highest speed. They choose five levels of octane ratings that vary between 92-96% with 5 times radomized replication. The table of experiments is summarize as shown below,

This semester, I take eight courses. Those course are System Thinking, Quantitative Method, Industrial Statistics, Strategic Management, Engineering Economics, Process Design, Industrial Organization, Operation Management, and Internship. All of those courses are interesting but the most interesting one is System Thinking.

Systems thinking is a perspective that helps us see and understand the big picture in new ways. This concept, which was founded in 1956 by Jay Forrester (MIT Professor), help people to make their understanding about social systems and engineering principles explicit. Besides the lecture has a little concern about numeric calculation, this course allows me to improve the way of thinking and improves problem solving skill.

Thinking skill is very important for every Industrial Engineers to understand problem’s structure. This course improves my thinking skill by giving a better understanding and perspective to explain the systemic behaviors. Once, we see the relationship between structure and behavior, we can understand how systems work, what make them produce poor results, and how to shift them into better behavior patterns.

As our world change rapidly and become more complex, System Thinking will help us manage, adapt, and see the wide of range of choices we have before us. It it a way of thinking that gives us the freedom to identfy root causes of problems and see new opportunities. Lastly, we can easily apply this knowledge in our daily life. As our life faces many choices, it also becomes more complex.
