The roles of Tor-tor dance in Batak’s Culture
No commentsNo Country without culture. Can you imagine that country without kind’s of citizen? Absolutely, the country like a death-world. But, this condition not happens in Indonesia. Indonesia has many kinds of culture because of having many clans. Every clan has a special thing that can make Indonesia proud with Indonesia’s richness. One of Indonesia’s rich is batak’s culture especially tot-tor dance. Tor-tor dance has 3 roles which are as a religion ritual, as a king’s coronation, and as a part of a good tradition party.
In Batak’s culture, tor-tor is used for religion rituals. Tor-tor as traditional dance, used by bataknese to pray for God. Especially for ancient religion, they pray with many rituals, such as tor-tor. In their pray, they hope God still bless them in their daily life. The other purpose of this ritual is to say thanks for God when they have a big harvest, choose their leader, etc.
Tor-tor is also used when the new king have been chosen. To express the gladness of king, he make a big tradition party. He and his family as the leader of the tradition party, invite their society to take part. They do tor-tor all day, may be in a week with the other rituals. It is indicated the beginning of his leadership.
Beside in King’s party, tor-tor is also used in society party. The society party is not so big like their King’s. So the duration also take a little time. However, there are some similarities in rituals, tor-tor always done in beginning to honour the leader of clan and to indicate their respect for God. All of these, show that all kinds of batak’s tradition party use tor-tor as the main part of batak’s life.
So, although batak divided in some sub folks. Tor-tor to be the main part in their tradition. The sub folks of batak have the different kinds of tor-tor but they have some purpose of it. I hope bataknese can continue this tradition and keep tor-tor become exist because it is one of the Indonesia’s miracle.
